elevator entertainment

It was a bad angle to take a photo but I noticed that everday people tend to watch the TV monitor as we ride the elevator to the different floors. We are only in the elevator for a few minutes but it seems everyone is always uncomfortable in the confined space. Is the TV really informative or just something to look at?

  1. I often think about that: my thoughts are people feel like they are forced to NOT acknowledge each other. In Europe, when getting in an elevator people greet each other with simple hello. It seems like this awkwardness evaporates. I had a friend who lived in NY for 1 year and for 1 year, everyday she went to work she said hello in the elevator hoping someone would eventually respond. No one ever answered her. She never understood why.

  2. I think people tend to be a little more friendly on the elevators at FIT, even if they don't know each other.

In other NYC settings I think people are shocked when someone says hello, because it is not expected. New Yorkers tend to respond if you ask directions and tend to be very helpful and friendly. Elevators may particularly awkward because they are so cramped.
